Why can't people pick normal usernames?
From an IM conversation yesterday:
Trent: have a sec?
Dan: sure thing
Trent: I have to vent.
Trent: Why can’t people pick normal usernames?
Trent: I give them gmail invites.
Trent: Here’s there one chance to finally NOT get a username with numbers after it — and they pick it with numbers after it!
Trent: Why is that?
Dan: lol
Dan: sometimes people get attached
Trent: What is the deal? seriously?
Dan: they like the cool numbers
Dan: easy to remember
Dan: maybe they are 1337 hax0rs
Trent: case in point: take a look at my flickr contact list
Trent: Most of those added are from my wife’s side - last name: Aikele. Is there anyone else on the planet with a last name of Aikele?
Dan: Aaron84?
Trent: exactly.
Trent: Josh3490.
Trent: And we haven’t even got to THE BEST ONE.
Trent: THE REASON FOR THIS ENTIRE CONVERSATION.
Dan: woah, you are getting worked up
Trent: I invite my father to flickr to see photos.
Dan: take a deep breath
Trent: he picks the username of
Trent: (drum roll)
Trent: “not little joe”
Trent: WhaAAT? $##!@#?
Dan: lol?
Dan: ?=!
Dan: that’s AWESOME!
Dan: too funny
Trent: your thoughts: please.
Dan: it is original, you have to give him that

OK Geekheads. You missed the reason why we numb-skulls pick wierd names. The service for Flickr says “Pick a Name”….and the example is “my little pony”. The example isn’t Fred Smith or Amy Johnson. So “Little Joe” comes to mind since that was my nickname as a kid and gosh my cue was “little pony”. But surprise! Somebody has already taken that name. So in comes the cursor and three more letters come out. NOT! Why do people use numbers in their google email? Blame Yahoo…Blame AOL….They have all suggested names with numbers. Or passwords….”have at least 2 numbers in an eight letter password”. Blame the programmers for brainwashing our minds and giving us cues to regurgitate geek language.
